Coloring your hair too much can cause several negative effects on your hair and scalp. I was very guilty at the start of my journey going from blonde to pink, purple, and all the colors of the chakras. SO I can fully attest to the negative. Here are some of the potential consequences of coloring your hair too frequently:
1. Frequent hair coloring can damage the hair shaft and cause it to become brittle, dry, and prone to breakage. This can result in split ends and frizz, making your hair look dull and unhealthy.
2. Hair dye can be harsh on the scalp, causing irritation, itching, and even burns. This can lead to dandruff, dryness, and redness of the scalp. Which is why Locsturizing often is necessary.
3. When you color your hair frequently, you weaken the hair strands, making them more prone to breakage. Especially with locd hair you may not see it right away but over time you'll see splitting or weaking in the ends or body of your locs. This can result in thinning hair and even hair loss.
4. Over time, the buildup of hair dye can cause the color to look uneven or dull, making it harder to achieve the desired look. This can also make it harder for the hair to absorb color in the future. Alternating between a Clarifying and Moisturizing shampoo is very important and should be considered in your routine.
5. Hair dye contains chemicals that can cause allergic reactions, including itching, rash, and swelling. If you color your hair frequently, you may be at a higher risk of developing an allergy to the hair dye.
" In 2017 a Rutgers University study found that using dark brown or black hair dyes was linked to a 51 percent increased risk of breast cancer among African Americans and a 72 percent increased risk that the cancer would be estrogen-receptor positive."
I opt to use black henna for my clients and add extra rosemary oil to their products to minimize grays.
All in all to avoid these negative effects, it's important to limit how often you color your hair and to use gentle hair products that are specifically formulated for colored hair. TLC4Locs offers two formulas, Citrus Seamoss Rosemary & Almond Apple Ginger.
If you're experiencing any of these issues after coloring your hair, it's important to speak to a professional stylist or a healthcare provider for advice.
